I think-but ...Some very interesting points, Maggie. I think-but don't have any clear evidence-what I've done here couldn't be handled by any of the major ebook producers as much as 1 to 2 years ago. I was told even this summer that 5 MB was probably the biggest I could go. Yet this is almost 7 MB, and nobody has any trouble with it (so far).

I've got more to say about this experiment and what I've learned, so I'll be blogging again in a few days about it. I'm also going to do a cross-blog with another author about things like what ebooks can't do (so far) that print books can. Stay tuned!
Delle Jacobshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09551688823035092802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-201215035349849601.post-51667615721596687752012-11-28T17:05:58.782-08:002012-11-28T17:05:58.782-08:00I really love these illustrations, Delle! Impress...I really love these illustrations, Delle! Impressive. It was also interesting to read about all the implications of including illustrations in an ebook. It has made me wonder what the liklihood is of e-readers taking over for children's books or graphic novels. On the other hand, I think devices like the Kindle Fire, the iPad and other 7-10 inch mini computers (iPad like) will make e-reading with illustrations much better.

Because traditional ebook formats like mobi and ePub are based on Internet file structure standards, it isn't possible to maintain all that nice consistency for illustrations right now. So far, I've only seen it work well in PDF form where everything is of a fixed size in relation to everything else. To get larger print you must increase by a percent, which then also increases pictures. It will be interesting to see if other ebook formats like Mobi or ePub end up adapting to the illustration needs or if they give way to something else. I strongly suspect some other (I hope universal) standard will emerge over the next two years that will allow e-reading including illustrations for all types of wireless devices from phones to iPads.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
